2018: A Look Back
Seeing Couples Make Lasting Changes
One of the things that makes sharing stories about our clients difficult is that taking steps to improve your marriage can be a long process. But, after almost three years, we’re starting to see real fruit from the hard work of our clients and couples mentors. One story in particular we want to share is the story of Michael & Karen (not their real names). It’s a story more than a yer and a half in the making. It began when Karen discovered that Michael had been keeping an affair from her for some time, and all the while promising that their marriage was on the verge of reconciliation and healing. It was a devastating realization and it nearly destroyed Karen. They were on the brink of divorce. But before they made that decision, they came to see us. For more than a year we worked with them, helping Karen process her grief, her anger. Helping Michael understand the gravity of his choices and the pain he had caused. There were numerous setbacks as they learned to trust, to serve, and to love one another again. At first, Michael struggled deeply to follow through on commitments he made and to be consistent with plans and efforts to rebuild trust. After several months, most of those kinks were worked out between them, but Karen was subsequently struggling to let go of the need to hold Michael accountable regarding his location at all times. It’s only in the last couple of months that Karen and Michael have been able to move beyond the pain of the past and trust each other once again. They have healed through tremendous work and commitment & demonstrated a love that glorifies God. We are so proud to have worked with them through this process, encouraging, mentoring, guiding, and praying for them, and we are glad to call them friends.
We don’t often get to share stories like this one, because so many of our clients are dealing with very difficult and complex situations that can take months or even years to resolve. But when we do get to share a success story like Michael & Karen, it thrills us immensely. Praise be to God for his power to heal broken people and broken relationships!
FCC Marriage Conference
Several months back we formed a partnership with First Christian Church in Warsaw. They send us couples for premarital mentorship regularly, and we have loved getting to know their people! In March, we were privileged to lead a marriage conference at their church. We spent the weekend with 17 couples from their congregation focusing on how our marriages are a picture of the gospel. Working through Scripture, pieces of our curriculum, and a lot of personal stories we were able to share with these couples how they can use their emotions, thoughts, and intimacy to mirror the sacrificial love Jesus has for the church. In so doing, each marriage paints a portrait of God’s miraculous love for the world to see. We had a blast getting to know these couples, talking about relationship skills and the spiritual basis of marriage, and have loved getting to continue the conversation with a few of them in sessions.
The Promise of the Future
We have had the privilege of working with 37 couples directly in sessions over the past two and a half years. Many more have been impacted by blog posts, online videos, or classes and conferences we’ve taught. We thank God continually for the work He is doing, but we know that we cannot carry this work on alone. In 2019 we are so very excited to announce that we are launching a new training program called Us(Plus). We will be training mentor couples in our proprietary resources so that they are equipped to serve couples in their churches, community, and areas of influence. To learn more about Us(Plus) click here. Equipped with God’s power, and your help, we can help every marriage become the story of gospel in their community - one marriage at a time!
